  • original data acquisition assumed to be "perfect"
  • amount of information in stored image relative to original image
  • lossless methods allow exact reproduction of original image
  • lossy methods allow less than exact reproduction and depends on:
    • compression method implied by image format in use
    • choice of person saving image
