  • JPEG (.JPG) - Joint Photographic Experts Group
    • pronounced "jay-peg"
    • several methods defined by standard
    • most commonly used is JFIF
    • incorporates discrete cosine transform (DCT) to compress
  • GIF - Graphic Interchange Format
    • pronounced "jiff", like the peanut butter
    • developed for 256-color images
    • proprietary to Compuserve
    • incorporates LZW by license from Unisys
    • impact of legal battle between Unisys and Compuserve still not clear
