Check any source for EWS.
The docs that come with them seemed to explain things pretty well, but
I found out some minor things about MSHELL during the couple of weeks
I ran it that weren't documented.
In CONFIG.SYS, put:
PROTSHELL=PMSHELL.EXE
SET RUNWORKPLACE=CMD.EXE
In STARTUP.CMD, put:
'IF NOT (%RUNWORKPLACE%)==(C:\OS2\PMSHELL.EXE) XCOPY C:\OS2\MSHELL.INI C:\MSHE
LL.INI'
'IF NOT (%RUNWORKPLACE%)==(C:\OS2\PMSHELL.EXE) START /F MSHELL'
This will launch a windowed command line session AND MSHELL.
From the RUNWORKPLACE session, you can start and shutdown WPS.
From the RUNWORKPLACE session and WPS, you can launch and shutdown multiple
cases of MSHELL. This is only significant if you overwrite
MSHELL.INI in the root directory with a different setup so each case
has a different menu. Probably a lot of needless complication,
but you can do it. :-)
There are a couple of utilities for starting DOS/WIN sessions
that are needed to do 16bit stuff without WPS.
I've run TSHELL maybe 15 minutes, so I don't know much about it,
just what I've told. It seems to be just a giant 'window list',
as I recall,
but it seems it would be more accurate to call it a 'full screen list'.
OS/2 seems to need PMSHELL to run SVGA, which I need for my video
output under normal circumstances.

I know Hobbes has some OS/2 specific and UNIX ports of command line
shells, some commercial,
but I don't know of any other graphical or menuing (or whatever) shells.
Probably Rollin could set us straight on this.
I've spilled my guts of everything I know about this topic.
