Updates from last month's column:

Peter Weilbacher has released Firefox version 3.5.2 as of 08/04/2009. This has been demoed by Tony Butka at previous SCOUG general meetings. It is a browser based on Mozilla that does not contain mail, newsgroups, Composer, IRC, etc. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/3.5.2/contrib/; the file name is firefox-3.5.2.en-US.os2.zip. More info is at http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/.

NOTES:

  1. If you are looking for an all-in-one suite similar to Mozilla, please take a look at SeaMonkey version 1.1.17 (see the July 2009 Download!).
  2. Steve Wendt has a Warpzilla tips page at http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html.
  3. As this is a major upgrade over the 2.0.0.x and 3.0.x series, be sure to read the README file; there are some known limitations listed, particularly in the area of printing, HTML5 audio/video support, and @font-face.
  4. You must unzip the file yourself into a directory and then create or update a program object accordingly.
  5. The GCC runtime is required; download that at ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0.6.3-csd3.zip (zip file), ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_3-csd3.wpi (WarpIn archive), or ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/libc-0_6_3-csd3.exe (a self- extracting executable). The GCC runtime installer defaults to x:\OS2\DLL (where x is your OS/2 or eComStation boot drive); it may be preferable to put the runtime in the same directory as the Firefox executable, or in x:\ECS\DLL (which is where I have it on my eComStation machine).
  6. Starting with Firefox 3.0, IPLUGINW.DLL for Java support is already included. Also, the Innotek Font Engine is no longer required with Firefox 3.5.x.
  7. Tony's notes on installing and running Firefox are at http://www.scoug.com/os24u/2003/scoug310.mozilla.html.

Peter has also released Firefox version 3.0.13 as of 08/04/2009. This has been demoed by Tony Butka at previous SCOUG general meetings. It is a browser based on Mozilla that does not contain mail, newsgroups, Composer, IRC, etc. Go to ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/3.0.13/contrib/; the file name is firefox-3.0.13.en-US.os2.zip. More info is at http://www.mozilla.org/ports/os2/.
