Subject: SCOUG-General: Video ramblings....

(Cross-posted to SCOUG-General & comp.os.os2.setup.video)

After discussing it with Steve S. and Paul W. after the SCOUG
meeting, I performed an experiment with my damaged video card
and B&W SVGA monitor connector cable.
I deliberately inserted the monitor cable onto the video card jack,
upside down. Without too much pressure, it went about half-way on,
with no apparent damage to either monitor plug or card jack.
Each is apparently at (or more properly -beyond- ;-) ) respective
limits for 'acceptably' over or under size. They did appear ever so
slightly off center.
This monitor plug has 9 pins as I count them, and seems to be functioning
the same as always (just fine).
The plug certainly inserted far enough to *look* Ok for someone
in a hurry, without a good view of the insertion process,
doing a temporary setup for repair work (More then planned :-) ) and most
importantly, who didn't know any better!
The only conclusion I can reach is that just because connectors
are "D" style, it does not guarantee a fool proof correct connection.

Moving on to the finally, does anyone have any good or bad experiences
with Cirrus Logic video card chipsets - The guy on the phone at Fry's
said this card (that would fit my needs nicely) was Trident, but instead
it turned to be Cirrus - so far seems to be working fine with
OS/2 and DOS.

Dallas E. Legan II
