Infoworld is a leading and highly successful weekly trade magazine for
computer professionals. It's published by IDG, and it's been around for
years and years.
And I've just learned that Infoworld's July 5 (p.33) review of IBM OS/2
Warp Server For e-Business was written by an Editor for Windows NT
Systems Magazine, and INFOWORLD DID NOT TELL THEIR READERS THIS.
Needless to say, the review wasn't kind to OS/2 Warp Server e-B. And if
anyone thinks that Microsoft dollars don't help support Windows NT
Systems magazine, that person is, well, nuts.
The review was authored by Tom Yager. References I was told to look at
concerning this:
Tom Yager's bio, citing his current editorship at WinNTSys
http://www.maxx.net/bio.htm
Tom Nadeau's expose
http://www.os2hq.com/archives/arch17.htm
I'm reminded of the recent WindowsNT-Linux comparison that an examiner
found Microsoft "paid for". I'm also reminded of the many disclosures
in recent months that show Microsoft essentially buys off anything it
wants.
And I'm reminded what "conflict of interest" is, and I'm reminded that
magazines with the stature of Infoworld should, at the very least,
inform their readership when a product review is written by a proponent
of the competition.
