From my friend, Lionel, up in TFN:
Some Y2K issues were recently identified that have yet to receive any
attention. These issues relate to some ancient applications that have
worked for what seems like forever. These applications are:
The Five Digit Single and Multi Color Plotter. This application is used
extensively in every industry and home where literacy exists. It is
unknown the ramifications of making this application Y2K compliant as
there is no technical means to add an additional digit.
The Dual Input Optical Recognition System. This system, sometimes
augmented by an external focusing attachment, was invented at the same
time as the Five Digit Single and Multi Color Plotter. The controlling
software for this application is imbedded in a solid object which
prevents easy access for replacement and the application design
specifications have been lost.
The impact of these 2 applications not being Y2K compliant is beyond the
scope of any speculation to date. At a minimum the financial impact
will far exceed that which is experienced during a standard month or
year transition. At its worst there could be a Global financial
meltdown returning us to the stone age and converting the Five Digit
Single and Multi Color Plotter into a Five Digit Single Rock Plotter.
This is an opportunity for creative individuals and firms to make a
significant amount of money if they can solve this problem.
