Subject: SCOUG-General: Pentium IV

Content Type: text/plain

Hi, gangs -

Earlier this week, I got a look at some of the software written for and
running on the Pentium IV and it's incredibly graphics intensive. The
thing that most impressed me was the fact that, for animations, it is
possible to have characters with 50K to 80K polygons describing most of
them. The typical stuff that's in the new PlayStation2 seems to have
about 10K-15K.

Why this is important is that it's clear that the IV contains some very
intense floating point improvements which should make graphic
accelerator cards incredibly whippy.

I also had a chance to see some stuff like statistical and other
numerically intense applications which ran very fast, but they were
nowhere near as impressive as the animation capabilities.

So, one question is whether there'll be a move to build some more
graphic capabilities on top of the new hardware for OS/2.
