Election Contrition
SCOUG's membership has reaffirmed their desire to truly
be a "Southern California" user group, yet SCOUG's Board of
Directors has done nothing to set up a program which would
bring OS/2 leaders and activists from outside of SCOUG's
Orange County center onto the Board.
The annual Board elections are mere weeks away. Where are
the representatives of San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura
County and the San Fernando Valley?
A few stalwart members drive to SCOUG's Orange County
activities from such far-away places, but a Board position
currently requires attendance at weeknight meetings as well
as the expectation that Board members will participate in
SCOUG activities such as the open-door Help Desk. Thus a
heavy burden is placed on would-be Board members who don't
reside in Orange County.
The Board should quickly, and that quickness should be
measured in days rather than months, make plans to broaden
their reach for new leadership. The technologies are
available; we have telephone conference calls, we have
Internet chat, we have the underutilized Board mailing list.
The Board should immediately promote the upcoming elections
throughout all of Southern California, and promote them as
heavily as SCOUG promoted its successful Warp Expo West.
And we have ample funds in the bank -- enough to compensate
those Board members who need to travel long distances when
they attend Board functions.
