This might be of interest to some. The June issue of IEEE's Computer
magazine had a letter to the editor extolling the merits of expanding
software development to include social, ethical and political criteria,
with, in my experience, the inevitable consequence that requirements and
specifications are subordinated. As a major part of my job puts me in
the role of systems engineer fighting a losing battle to keep
development projects on a track guided by requirements, this sounded
like a pile to me. The following letter, I'm sure juxtaposed
intentionally, was a delight as it made a compelling case for the
central role software requirements (specifications) should have. My
delight was doubled when I noted that the author of this second letter
was our own Lynn Maxson. This journal, apparently, is not online or I'd
provide a link. Nice, Lynn.
