Oops!

(This message was directed at Peter, but was wrongly
posted to this list (largely because I'm an idiot)).

Explanation:
We've been looking for an inexpensive way to keep
12V UPS batteries charged up _without_ overcharging.
Seems like the cheapie 12Vdc (11V) wall-wart power
supplies used on so many appliances these days are
just the ticket. Not the fancy regulated ones, but
the simple transformer/rectifier models like one sees
so often at swap meets and flea markets.

A current capacity of 0.20-0.50A is plenty adequate to
keep a gel-cell battery topped-off. You can even connect
up several batteries in parallel and use one wall-wart
as a charger for all -- as long as you're not in a hurry
to charge anything. It takes my little wall-wart two
weeks (!) to completely charge the monster (60-lb) 100A-hr
UPS battery I use for HAM radio backup, but about a day
for my 500VA computer UPS battery.

[Everyone should have a UPS -- don't you? ]

Sorry for the OT babble ....
