"Yes, we missed the wrap-up, but doubt it could have had
anything to make me feel all that much different about the
state of things. ..."
Carla,
IBM, Serenity Systems, and Innotek addressed migration issues
for corporate OS/2 accounts whose number continue to
decline. At the same time for all us non-corporate users
existing under the radar we in general have an improved
situation since IBM withdrew from the retail market due in
large part to the same three sources.
I think we can get excited about OpenOffice for OS/2. Maybe
we don't yet have a solution for entering the 64-bit world, but
our 32-bit runs just fine on a 64-bit AMD chip. Device drivers
will remain a concern.
It's nice to have the few remaining ISVs to support OS/2 for us.
As they indicate that they too will be migrating once
corporate has, we probably should take more seriously
drawing upon our own talent to continue the support on our
own. If I have a complaint, it's not about for-profit firms who
for reasons of economic health move away from OS/2. Rather
it's about those users who do not want to move away, but
who also don't want to engage in an effort that allows them
to stay. The big boys act like big boys. It's time we learned
to do likewise. Otherwise we don't get no respect as the
various speakers in chorus made clear.
