Subject: SCOUG-General: Building a Modern OS/2 PC

Content Type: text/plain

I've never built a PC, but since our Prez has (and brings it to
meetings, and it works), I figure it must be possible. My current PC
(an Indelible Blue custom built unit) works pretty well, but is getting
kind of long in the tooth.

Would SCOUG like to spec and build a modern, highly functional PC? It
seems as if this would be a good exercise for many members. We could
discover what hardware works and what doesn't. We could figure out what
software is indispensible, is nice to have, or is past its "use by"
date. We could create a list of the preferred parts, where to get them,
etc., and share it with the members (or the entire OS/2 community, for
that matter).

The result would be a top notch unit (probably with Windoze, and maybe
with Linux, as well as the best possible OS/2), as well as a set of
specs that others could use to construct equally satisfying units. I
envision it having top quality video, high quality sound, and full USB
capability. Also, it would include a DVD burner, and the best printer
we can find (in terms of print quality, ink & paper cost, and initial
cost). I'm sure there are other peripherals that other members would
like to consider.

SCOUG might be able to auction or raffle this PC, or one like it.

I would be willing to fund (or help fund) this effort, if it didn't get
too far into "deep pockets" territory. Of course, I'd like to come out
of the exercise with either a shiny, new, top of the line PC, or at
least the knowledge of how to get or build one.

I haven't yet attended a SCOUG Help Desk meeting,. Would that be a
place and time that construction of the PC could be managed?

This is more an idea than a hard proposal right now, designed to get
SCOUG talking about the idea, and if it is popular, start working out
the details.

Please let me know what you think!
Thanks,
Colin Campbell
