The 2005 International Rexx Symposium will celebrate the transfer of
IBM Object REXX to RexxLA as an Open Source project! The Agenda will
feature presentations addressing this significant contribution to the
support and enhancement (not to mention affordability) of one of the
most powerful Rexx interpreters available.
In order to accommodate the anticipated interest in Open Object Rexx,
the Symposium will be extended to four days again. In addition to open
source Rexx issues, the technical program will feature topics addressing
application development challenges, Rexx solutions to business problems,
Rexx language enhancements and extensions, novel Rexx programming ideas,
and the design and implementation of Rexx interpreters and compilers.
The full range of Rexx platforms and environments will be represented,
from the mainframe to the PDA, from traditional operating systems to
the Java and .Net environments to the lightweight PalmOS and telephony
platforms.
The Symposium will be held at the Palos Verdes Inn in Redondo Beach,
a beautiful Southern California seaside resort. It has been ten years
since the Symposium was last held on the West Coast, so this will be
an excellent opportunity for Rexx enthusiasts in the Pacific Basin to
attend.
The audience will range from those who are relatively new to Rexx, to
the authors of Rexx language processors.
--- Proposals for Symposium presentations are hereby solicited ---
Presentations on Rexx applications in all fields of the industry are
expressly encouraged.
Presentations in the following topic areas are of particular interest:
* ANSI Standard-compliant extensions to existing Rexx interpreters
* Interesting Rexx applications, tools, and solutions
* Deploying Rexx applications on unusual or diverse platforms
* Multi- and cross-platform applications
* Rapid prototyping in Rexx
* Designing Rexx applications for performance and portability
* Rexx in client/server applications
* Object-oriented Rexx interpreters
* Rexx language extensions (e.g. new Rexx function packages,
bridging Rexx with Java, bridging Rexx with .Net)
* Using/enhancing Rexx interfaces to OLE/ActiveX/WSH, SOM/WPS, etc.
* Using Rexx with emergent technologies such as telephony and wireless
* Re-hosting applications that use Rexx
* Large-scale or mission-critical Rexx applications
* Rexx compilers and libraries
* Products that use Rexx as a scripting or macro language
* Rexx interpreters and status of current Rexx implementations (vendor,
open-source, and experimental)
The Sunday before the Symposium (17 April 2005) will be dedicated to informal
tutorials, followed by a reception. Proposals for tutorial presentations
are solicited at this time as well.
Presentations are requested at all audience levels: introductory, tutorial,
practitioner, and advanced.
Session proposals should include session title, speaker name (with brief
bio), intended audience level, abstract (<100 words), and any special A/V
or connectivity requirements.
Sessions are generally one hour long, but alternative durations can be
accommodated on request. Speakers should allow ample time for questions
and demonstrations.
Presentation proposals must be submitted by email to abstracts@rexxla.org
for consideration.
All proposals must be received by 7 Feb 2005.
Speakers will be notified of acceptance on or before 14 Feb 2005 via email.
In order to be included in the Proceedings of the 2005 Rexx Symposium, a
publication-ready version of the presentation (preferably in PDF) must be
submitted by 28 March 2005.
The International Rexx Symposium is the only technical conference dedicated
to the Rexx family of programming languages, drawing speakers and attendees
from around the world. The 2005 Rexx Symposium is sponsored by the Rexx
Language Association, a non-profit member organization, with the generous
support of IBM, Safe Data, Aresti Systems, The Programmers Guild, and many
other loyal benefactors. The 2005 Rexx Symposium Committee members are Gil
Barmwater, Chip Davis, Rony Flatscher, Terry Fuller, Mark Hessling, Lee Peedin,
and Julia Westerling.
