Good Morning Mark,
Thank you for your interest in the Fullerton Music Department. As the
drum set instructor, I am always excited to hear about interested
students with as much experience as your son's.
Mike Scott was correct in stating that I am the instructor that auditions
the drummers for placement in the performing ensembles. However, is has
been our informal practice that all of the returning instrumentalists are
allowed to continue through from the Fall Semester. If a chair opens up
-- in this case a drum chair -- the instructor will contact me for a
recommendation. As it stands currently, no one has contacted me with
such a request -- which doesn't necessarily mean that there are no
openings in groups other than professor Scott's.
Since I haven't heard from any of the jazz instructors, I'm guessing
those classes are full. However, you might check the course catalog for
Ray McNamera's Steel Drum classes. I believe he teaches two and they
meet in the evenings which hopefully wouldn't conflict with your son's HS
schedule. They play a range of styles including: Calypso, Reggae,
Brazilian, jazz and pop and usually have at least two set drummers per
ensemble.
In the meantime, please contact the Dean of Fine Arts' office to clarify
the procedures that would allow for your son to be enrolled in our
department. Our Dean is Bob Jensen and he can be contacted at
rjensen@fullcoll.edu or by phone at (714) 992-7294.
Thanks again for your interest in our music department. I look forward
to the opportunity to meet (and hopefully work with) your son in the
future.
Kindest Regards,
Matt Johnson
