With a PCL laser, you can sometimes get away with less memory if the
printer supports features like MEt and Page Protection. However, they are
not a substitute for more memory because you give up image resolution and
with complex images you may see the banding.

Both the application and the driver have to work hard to generate a
high-resolution image. You might experiment with the Print While Spooling
option to see which setting works best for you.
