Ben, I've had good luck with Object Recreator a number of times.

Unzip and run it - it's a PM app. Scroll down a few lines until you get
to the object you want to recreate. There's a System object listed with
the object id which *might* be what you want to recreate.
I've never had a problem "recreating" an object that already existed,
but you might want to back up your broken desktop in case it gets
worse. The Info button says all existing settings are preserved and
it's never broken anything here when I've run it.
