FWIW, I got curious and tracked down how an FTP-Modem object knows it's
different from an FTP-Lan object. It was not obvious since they are both
the same class and there's nothing in the settings folder to indicate the
difference.
FTP-Modem objects are created with a setup string that includes:
CONNECTPGM=LINKUP.EXE
FTP-Lan objects are created without this string. All the other TCP/IP
objects that know the difference between being a LAN or Modem object work
the same way. The gory details are in IAK.TXT which is in the TCP/IP
installation kit.
What this means is you can create your own set of objects that will invoke
a linkup program with any name your choose.
