The Motorola cable modem I use memorizes the MAC of the NIC it was connected to upon power up and does
not work with a new NIC unless it is reset (a little red button on the back). The Linksys has a MAC
that the modem does not recognize. Resetting or powering off/on should allow it to memorize the "new"
MAC.
I have an SMC router/firewall similar to the Linksys. Both it and the cable modem are always powered
up. In fact neither the modem nor the SMC even have a power switch. If you do power down, power up
the Linksys first so the modem can see a MAC on POST.
My SMC also acts as the hub for our three computers and two networked printers (each has its own print
server). It must be up so any of the computers can get onto the web or print at any time. The
computers and printers are not all in the same room.
