>From the current VOICE newsletter
(http://www.os2voice.org/VNL/past_issues/VNL1001H/vnewsfl.htm):
Also, don't forget! If you run a HDD larger
than about 9GB, add this line to your
CONFIG.sys (and don't forget to update
your boot floppies, Disk1, as well):
BASEDEV=CHKDSK.SYS
which enables preallocation of RAM for
CHKDSK's use for processing large HDDs.
This avoids the all-too-familiar "hangs at
boot while CHKDSKing my 18GB (or larger)
partition". And be prepared for drastically
reduced CHKDSK times (my two 18GB
partitions CHKDSK in about seven minutes,
on a K6-3/450), and an extra reboot after
CHKDSK completes.
Here's what I found on my hard drive ("DIR *CHKDSK* /S"):
Directory of G:\OS2
2-10-99 1:15p 70208 0 CHKDSK.COM
2-05-99 4:41p 6417 0 CHKDSK32.EXE
12-02-98 5:02p 28183 0 PMCHKDSK.EXE
Directory of G:\OS2\BOOT
11-23-98 5:28p 747 0 CHKDSK.SYS
Directory of G:\OS2\DLL
11-23-98 5:37p 121895 0 CHKDSK32.DLL
11-04-96 4:44p 4127 0 PMCHKDSK.DLL
Questions:
-- Where is the documentation on CHKDSK.SYS?
-- Why would RAM "preallocation" speed up CHKDSK?
-- Why is the additional reboot necessary?
-- What is CHKDSK32?
-- Is PMCHKDSK a front end for CHKDSK, or is it something else?
Peter
