My daily processing ended at 8:10 p.m. I added /W to my IFS=CDFS.IFS
line and rebooted.

The system hung trying to start the Workplace Shell.

So over stroddles The Duck, who bites me on the ankle and says "Will you
ever run UniMaint like Levine keeps telling you to do?"

I search for my UniMaint and find it on the floor under the desk. I
copy the files on the two diskettes to a UniMaint directory on my hard
drive. I figure the best way to send Mr. Levine into apoplexy is not to
read the documentation or the ReadMe, so I simply run GTINST.exe. It
works.

Then I try to install the UniMaint update
(http://www.filestar.com/pages/download.html). The web page
*specifically* says that you *must* use SHSINST to install the update.
But there's no SHSINST link on the page. And there's no SHSINST file in
the just-installed UniMaint. I spend close to 20 minutes searching
everything short of grep for SHSINST.

It's nowhere to be found. I figure I'll try to install the update
anyway, even though I don't have SHSINST. I download the U5100140
update file and unzip it.

Inside the unzipped update file is SHSINST.

Sigh.

I run SHSINST and then reboot because CONFIG.SYS has been modified. I
start UniMaint.exe. I click on Repair and run "Report Only". It runs
and runs and runs. I decide to stop it. There's no Stop button. I
figure it will take a while to crank through 30 GB so I leave it running
and go have a snack.

When I return there's a long list on the screen of errors that UniMaint
found. Cool. I high-speed scroll through the list several times. As
near as I can figure there are about 10,000 error lines. No wonder
CHECKINI hangs up. No wonder my Desktop won't automatically start. No
wonder ObjectRecreator won't work.

I check "Do Repair" and click Execute. It runs and runs and runs. It
fixes the User Ini File and the System Ini File.

Then I try ObjectRecreator again. It works fine now, and recreates my
Desktop. I reboot. Well heck, everything is now peachy keen. Fancy
that.

So The Duck stroddles back over and again bites me on the ankle. "What
was THAT for?" I say. "That's for ignoring Levine's advice for two
months," quacks The Duck.

Oh, and the /W on the CDFS.IFS line works too. I now have long
filenames on my CDs.
