Well that was easy -- thanks.
Actually, dfsee wasn't needed. When I ran fixext, it said there was
nothing to fix.
Booting from floppies and running lvm from the command line, once I
figured out what I was doing, allowed me to create a new volume, and eCs
rebooted with the smaller partition just fine.
