OK, the SMC and printer cable set is working (Windows test). What I was trying to do was narrow down
the problem area. And it is not the SMC.

How long does it take before the not responding message appears?

In \tcpip\bin there is a file called tcpstart.cmd. Near the end of the file (at least
on mine) it should say something like:

...
REM start sendmail -bd -q30m -CC:\MPTN\ETC\sendmail.uml
REM echo ..... SENDMAIL Started
detach lprportd
echo ..... LPRPORTD Started
echo ..... FINISHED STARTING THE TCP/IP PROCESSES

:DONESERVERS

IF EXIST C:\tcpip\bin\TCPEXIT.CMD CALL C:\tcpip\bin\TCPEXIT.CMD
echo ..... EXITING TCPSTART.CMD .....

This is what starts the LPRPORTD program.

If is is not there add it and run tcpstart.cmd from a command line.

Also, there is a shadow of tcpstart.cmd in my StartUp folder. It was put there by the LAN properties
notebook, afaik, when lprportd was activated.
