In the Simi Valley Linux community (www.sclug.org),
Pac Bell has a _dismal_ reputation for DSL. Here
in Newbury Park with GTE (Verizon) DSL we have fared
somewhat better than colleagues in Simi with Pac Bell,
only 15 miles away.
But then, I have the secret phone number to contact
real DSL support, and I do _NOT_ use gte.net as my service
provider, but instead use a local, family-run business
of knowledgeable and helpful Unix/Mac folks. I chose
DSL 'cause I wanted to keep VCNET as my ISP.
It turned out to be the best part of the whole decision
process.
We once had both ATT and GTE cable systems here, but
now that GTE has sold out to Adelphia, we're back to
NO competition.
Seems like a losing game whatever one does.
