Being in a GTE/Verizon area is a mixed blessing.

It means I have to put up with GTE/Verizon, but I've
signed up with VCNet (almost 7 years now) and now
have very reliable DSL service. www.vcnet.com

If you're in a area served by them, they have to be
one of So. Cal's best DSL providers. Read the reviews
at DSL reports and see why! You won't find them listed
with the big boys, but their service is indeed "stellar"
(to steal an adjective from Sheridan).

It's a small family operation run by some very sharp
Unix/Mac devotees, and they're OS/2 friendly! They've
even hosted the local OS/2 SIG on occasion.

The best part is that they are familiar with the various
GTE/Verizon screw-ups and can get them fixed. They have
the secret unlisted phone number (they'll give it to you
if you ask) that gets you right to knowledgeable support
at GTE/Verizon who can actually do something. Not of the
finger-pointing shuffle so common elsewhere.

Many of the local techie groups are with VCNet, the
Sulphur Mountain Repeater Association for example. These
folks chose VCNet for a reason. And they're still there.

They say:
"... we can only offer ADSL to Verizon customers in the
Greater LA Area at this time -- parts of Santa Barbara County,
Ventura County, LA County, San Bernadino County, Riverside County,
and Orange County. You will have to pay Verizon an charge
every month for the line, which varies based on the speed. "

This amounts to $25 for VCNET and $32 for GTE/Verizon.

My wife was skeptical at first, but is now converted, She
readily says she'll never go back. Me too.
