Stupid junk mail filter kicked out my message because it doesn't allow
the string "e direct" (without the space) and I had "/some directory/"
(without the space) in my message.

Sandy, Steven is correct -- the -r option is "recursive" and will
download the entire tree.

I *think* you only wanted the entire contents of one subdirectory, in
which case use

wget ftp://sitename/anydirectory/*

Note that you should use two forward slashes after the "ftp:".
