My experience with Windows partitions is that the only, reasonably
successful backup method, that I have been able to find is Drive Image.
And that does not allow for individual file restores; it is all or
nothing.

Even Drive Image is not 100% reliable. I always do a "Verify image" after
creating the image, and I always have a second, backup of the backup. Even
then, it doesn't always work (i.e. image is corrupted or there is a file
check error that can't be fixed, etc.).

If you do try Drive Image, don't get anything later than version 5.0. The
newer one, version 2002, does not recognize HPFS partitions. They say you
can create an hpfs partition if you disable smart sector copying, or
something like that, but v. 5.0 works fine.
