Seagate -- they were called Winchester drives at that point -- with an ST-506
interface,
IIRC. They had the temerity to charge a lot closer to $1500. then !! (It might even
have
been considerably more, I don't recall. This was circa '83 / '84.) It was truly a
P.O.S.
Mine lasted 3 months and promptly croaked. Out of warranty, no refund. I heard
similar
reports from many other folks. Seagate had a terrible reputation back then. They did
not
make any good drives until a few years later, after they acquired CDC, the premiere
h/d
mfr. of that era.
My 2nd. h/d was a Plus HardCard 20, which pretty much hit your price figure. It was
RLL interface (?), fast for its day, extremely reliable (100 G's shock rated, or
somesuch),
and could have lasted more than the few years I had it in that '386 box, but the
capacity
became inadequate much sooner.
