In have a 2645-4AU: 366 MHz PII, CDROM, 6GB, 128MB (originally).
I believe the model numbers do increment just as you suggested,
But there seems to be no particular scheme. I don't know
anyone who's ever been able to explain it.

I bought a 2X DVD, 20GB HD, more RAM (a 256MB SODIMM),
Cardbus (PCMCIA) NIC, spare battery, 12V airline/car adapter, etc.
mostly on eBay.

Note that the 2X DVD is NOT region sensitive, the newer,
faster one (6X?) is.

An early BIOS update allowed (some) 256MB RAM modules to be recognized.
IBM never updated their documentation. The subject is often
discussed on the ThinkPad list and the archive has the discussions.
Having a lot of RAM in a laptop saves power and increases speed
by not using the swap space on disk.

I bought mine as an IBM refurb, paying top dollar on the refurb market.
Being new to laptops, I wanted to be sure I had a good one.
For me, at that time, the "peace of mind" was important (it was a
family gift). IBM refurbs are lease returns, and supply depends
on what is coming back to them off lease. Current offerings are
certainly different now.

Today, now that I'm more knowledgeable, I would also consider
other sources, like eBay and half.com. Occasionally members of
the ThinkPad list offer their used machines for sale. Some of
these are very well cared-for and are well priced.
