Thanks to Gary and to Steve Carter, I found out how to add these.
Steve mentioned that he'd had an identical use for this (as place
markers / dividers). But I've been finding that some programs do not
respect these, or just plain eat them. In particular, I've grown
rather dependent on the program Web Organizer, to maintain and
recompile my hierarchical bookmark database. This program does its
thing in HTML. I have a "working" file of bookmarks to be added,
which is typically large enough to benefit from these markers or
internal notes. Web-Org., a fine program whose development
unfortunately ceased just when it was getting good, has a nasty habit
of making these comments disappear. My workaround is to keep
over-writing this working file from a spare copy that is separately
edited outside of Web-Org.
So I guess my follow-on question becomes, is there an HTML comment
format that one's HTML-based application cannot zap, yet won't cause
it to choke ?
