How about the SAVEDSKF/LOADDSKF programs on Hobbes? They were written by
IBM and will save a disk image to a container file (SAVEDSKF) then
re-create it again (LOADDSKF).

As an alternative, Daniel Valot (France) has a program, EMT4PM, that
does about the same thing:
