A safe way to test virus tools is to use the EICAR test string. Most
virus software includes this string in its search, but it isn't a real virus.
So your virus will trigger, but you won't get in trouble for sending it over
the intenet. Get it from http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
Yes, sending real viruses is illegal. Your probability of getting jacked
up is probably proportional to the damage you do, of course. Sending
it to yourself is probably unlikely to be detected, but a mistake, a
complaint, a zealous prosecutor with time on his hands, and you'll be
asking Peter for a reference for a stinkin lawyer.
