I think it was Sandy who posted a query here recently about the Canon
S400 digital camera. I know little about digital photography at this
point, but a relative of mine with serious interest in the subject
selected the Digital Elph S230 after some fairly exhaustive research.
The size, weight, and versatility were factors in her decision, but
she could have bought a considerably more expensive camera if there
seemed to be any clear advantages in doing so. (In fact, I think she
might have had one or two other digital cameras prior to this one, and
learned a lot from them as to what was good or useful, and what
wasn't. Among these lessons were that sheer megapixels don't begin to
tell the whole story, and that some memory types -- especially the
non-standard proprietary ones -- are an expensive PITA, certain flash
cards are of an especially flimsy design and easily damaged, etc.)
The only thing she has regretted about the S230 is that it does not
offer any more than a 2X Optical Zoom.
I was wondering what light you might be able to shed on the relative
merits of the S400 vs. the S230, not just from a specs standpoint,
which I could certainly look up, but from practical usage ?
IIRC, you were having some problems getting USB access to this camera
under OS/2 ? Not much to offer on that score, but there have been a
number of digicam utilities for OS/2 come down the pike, starting with
the (I guess now outdated) DCITU, the Russian "3rd. Eye" package, and
probably a couple others I'm overlooking. So, none of these could do
the job for you ?
