Hi Denny,

Steven's idea is an excellent one.

Also, since your problem appears to be that you can't connect, you might
want to try using TELNET to see what kind of response the various news
servers give you.

For example, to telnet to the German news server above, go to a command
line and run:

telnet -p 119 newscache0.freenet.de

(The "-p 119" makes telnet use port 119, which is the standard port
number for news servers.)

TELNET might respond with a "Trying..." prompt that never does anything
more, indicating the news server isn't responding (you might have a bad
url or you might be trying to reach the news server from outside their
allowed IP range or your ISP might be blocking you on port 119 or you
might have a firewall that's not letting port 119 through).

Or, you might get a message back from the news server that begins with
the number 200 or 201, in which case you can type in "quit" to get back
to the command line.

I just tried to telnet to four different news servers from my cox.net
connection down here in San Diego. Here are my results:

news.cox.net worked
news.earthlink.net failed (connected, then dropped me)
news.verizon.net failed ("Trying...")
newscache0.freenet.de worked
