I would expect this given your code. Without writing the output file, you
are testing string copy time rather than file reformatting time.

The results are somewhat surprising in that I did not expect string
handling time to degrade this quickly for large strings. I need to think
about this and decide if REXX is really this bad a string handling or if
it could be something about your system.
