Well, that was not the problem.
The code that's failing is:
if (ioctl (dev->pl->fd, request, &bit) < 0) {

return GP_ERROR_IO;
}
The problem is that the code does not report the OS level error code, we
can only guess what the true failure is. The code does not look quite
right to me. Have you asked the gphoto2 maintainers about this yet?
If they can't resolve the issue, we need to use OS2TRACE to track down the
failure. It's at Hobbes. You'll probably need some help getting it up
and running.
