Sure, good question. First, remember that Junk Spy adds some additional
lines to an email message header if it thinks that the message is
"junk". And they recommend that your first filter should be to check
for one of these lines, for example the added line
X-JunkSpy-Junkmail: Yes
and if that line exists in the message then filter the message to a
"Junk Mail" folder.
However, there are occasional errors. Just the other day I posted a
message to this list about a printer repair company that operated out of
the owner's home, and I used the phrase "h*me*based business" (the
asterisks are mine so Junk Spy's filter won't be activated) which caused
Junk Spy to think the message was an advertisement.
I've had some quite notable errors. A couple of years ago one of my
attorneys sent me an important email which contained a business phrase
that made Junk Spy think it was an advertisement, and the message went
into my Junk Mail folder. Luckily I review my Junk Mail messages before
deleting them so I eventually got the message, but the delay caused a
bit of grief.
And the message lists which are hosted by Yahoo often contain short
advertising lines at the bottom, so Junk Spy thinks the messages should
be junked.
Thus I do some filtering _before_ I check for the Junk Spy line in the
header. I filter out messages from family members, friends and vendors
whom I do business with (each goes to a separate folder). I then filter
out anything from the various newsletters that I subscribe to, and then
the mail lists that I'm on (usually on the Reply-To line, but not all
lists use this so I sometimes have to filter on some other unique line
in the header (such as X-List or whatever looks like it will work).
*Then* I filter out the messages tagged by Junk Spy.
There is an extra benefit to filtering in this manner. Nothing is left
in my Inbox since every message is filtered to a folder. And if some
message *is* left in the Inbox, I know I need to modify my filters to
properly identify it.
