Last night at work a friend brought in two Microsoft optical mice that he
said didn't work. The story of their demise is the same for both: He had
a lamp sitting atop his cpu. He reached to turn on the lamp and got a
static shock. (His computer was on). He heard a zapping sound come out
of his speakers and when he went to use the computer the optical mouse
would not work. They are of the usb variety.

I brought the mice home and gave them a try. The pointer works and the
right button works, but the left button does not.

I called a couple of computer specialists I know in the school district
and their answer was to throw them away.

Not wanting to be wasteful, I started Googling, but have come up short on
causes of optical mouse dysfunction and repair. Are there any ideas on
how to evaluate and perhaps correct this breakdown? I am assuming the
mice have experienced an electrical burn-out of sorts.
