Here is the response from using telnet:
telnet -p 110 pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
+OK hello from popgate(2.23.13)
user MYID HERE
+OK password required.
pass MYPASSWORD HERE
+OK maildrop ready, 0 messages (0 octets) (9402 26214400)
Above, I substituted my ID and password.
Apparently, I have access to the mailbox via telnet but not Netscape
