Background:
I have an IBM ThinkPad T20, 650MHz P-3, 256MB RAM, approx 12GB HD,
running Win98 & OS/2 Convenience Pack 2 in a Boot Manager setup (both
Win 98 and Convenience Pack 2 are both in their own primary C: drives,
then a FAT 16 D: drive that is accessable by both, and a HPFS E: drive
seen only by OS/2, of course). The OS/2 partition has the latest FixPak
and Device Driver FixPak.

Problem:
The machine freezes (i.e. stops; at first it froze in OS/2 and the clock
in the Warp Center stopped running, the mouse pointer doesn't move when
you move the TrackPoint, Cntl-Alt-Delete doesn't work, and I have to
power off and on). Or in Win 98, it would freeze where again the mouse
pointer would no longer move, and again I'd have to power off and on.

Now it's gotten worse to where it either freezes at Boot Manager, or in
the early bootup process of Win 98 or OS/2.

If it freezes in Boot Manager, I can't even use the cursor up/down keys
to select Win 98 or OS/2.

If it freezes in the Win 98 boot process, it freezes at the Win 98
splash screen or after the splash screen disappears; if it freezes in
the OS/2 bootup, it stops at the white OS/2 blob in the upper left-hand
corner.

Removing and re-seating the 2 RAM modules (one of them given to me by
Kim Cheung!) didn't work (although a couple of months ago when it first
started to happen it did), so I called the IBM help center.

They had me run a drive fitness test utility, and that passed; then
after trying various things, the lady at the IBM help center had me
take out the hard drive out and boot without the hard drive (and go
into the BIOS settings). The ThinkPad then recognized that there was
no hard drive, and after I pressed any key, it then went into the rest
of the BIOS settings.

I ended the phone call with IBM where they feel the contents of the
hard drive (i.e. Boot Manager, Win 98, OS/2) are corrupted enough to
cause the machine to freeze. They suggested wiping out the hard drive
and then reloading Win98 from a recovery CD that came with the ThinkPad.

What do you think? (especially Steven) Is it the contents of the hard
drive, or is it the motherboard, RAM, or something else?
