Once I got the RAR file from Simtel -- or wherever -- I had the very
dickens of a time attempting to unarchive it. Had to work my way
through about 5 versions of RAR. One said that my eval copy had
expired, and I needed to register it. (That one was d/l'd a long time
ago, but never used . . . because I despise having to deal with RAR
at all. Why can't these Euro-folk just get a clue go along with the
prevailing standard, even if it isn't the fastest or most efficient
??)
Another two insisted that the Archive was Locked, which would
seem to defeat the whole purpose. If that was truly the case (and
I doubt it), NO means of unlocking it was offered.
A later RAR version actually indicated that it was processing the
archive,
but in the end reported 384 file errors, all Skipped, I think because
it
could not i.d. the files as being RAR compression types. On another
couple passes, it choked and died somewhere in the middle, locking up
my system and forcing a Reset. Finally, with a RAR 3.0 beta, the most
recent one I could find, the archive contents were extracted.
Now I have to admit, cramming about 84 meg. worth of stuff into an 18M
package ain't too shabby, but I never run into these kinds of problems
with
PKZip or InfoZip, wasting a ridiculous amount of time in the process.
