Hi Jordan
Right, I am still using my 3COM U.S.Robotics Professional Message Modem
;-)
I would never change my environment with a built in modem !

My present modem works as an Fax Machine with the Modem and as Phone =

Answering machine however the PC is ON or OFF ;-))

Since short time I already have bought 2 ZyXel 2864 ID (the ISDN
version) to replace =

my old 3COM U.S.Robotics. With these 2 ZyXel's I am able to work with
my PMfax =

SOHO version supplying 2 lines: one INcoming and the other OUTgoing
only ;-)))
Like this my facsimile transactions are automatized:
With PC and PMfax ON, every INcoming fax will be received by PMfax ...
=2E.. if PC and PMfax are not running the ZyXel 2864ID stores the arrived
facsimiles. =

I will have to learn how to import the stored facsimiles from modem to
PMfax =

later !?

Well, it's up to ONEs individual needs to choose the right component(s)
!
I am ready to get my perfect solution very soon !!
BTW: Buying off from eBay it was very cheap:
Each the units were more than 600 US$ new
and my expenses were 100 US$ both ;-))

Have a nice weekend, =

Cheers, svobi

I have an old USR Courier V. Everything external, which I use for
dial-up emergencies,
if the DSL ever goes down -- which it does for awhile, a few times a
year. This was one
of the early 56K units, before the dueling 56K standards, and well
before V.90 or V.92.

I think it may have been Svobi who mentioned a current USR external
model that is a
direct descendent of the one I have. Your chances of finding a good
*real* unit (non-
WinModem) go up dramatically if you consider the external units. There
are probably
still nice ones from Zoom Telephonics, Multitech, and others. Granted,
these are going
to be considerably more expensive than the internals. While
recognizing the convenience
issue and the price factor, I've still never quite grasped some folks'
aversion to the
external
models. I'd rather have an external, any day.
Jordan
