I noticed the date too and concluded that was why I was not seeing any
crosshatched areas. The color is important as there are several features
that are shown crosshatched using different colors.

You only need to select refresh when you change the visible features. The
active feature only determines the Identify results. Select an Active
feature and click on the Identity icon and then click on a map item and
you will see how this works.
