I have an old USR Courier V. Everything external, which I use for dial-up emergencies,
if the DSL ever goes down -- which it does for awhile, a few times a year. This was one
of the early 56K units, before the dueling 56K standards, and well before V.90 or V.92.
I think it may have been Svobi who mentioned a current USR external model that is a
direct descendent of the one I have. Your chances of finding a good *real* unit (non-
WinModem) go up dramatically if you consider the external units. There are probably
still nice ones from Zoom Telephonics, Multitech, and others. Granted, these are going
to be considerably more expensive than the internals. While recognizing the convenience
issue and the price factor, I've still never quite grasped some folks' aversion to the
external
models. I'd rather have an external, any day.
