Probably because the same code that is messing up the Date tag on the way
out is misinterpretting it on the way in. If you try to test a broken
instrument with the same broken instrument, the results are suspect.

I'll know more in a bit. I'm testing 1.5rc2's mail here and can duplicate
your defect.
