It's usually routine, but not always. :-)
I do have benefit of having been around hardware for a long time and
experience does help. However, I really don't know all that much about
the specifics of todays PC hardware, so I often just fall back on common
sense.

This sorta reminds me of my theory that you don't stuff things into the
box until you know they are runnings. Hardware likes room to breathe.
