Because they're still tremendously cheaper than hard drives, and nothing is easier to store or more
portable -- esp. if you believe in off-site backup.

No, you misread me. It is the compressed image file that is the "particular specialty" of the
programs I was referring to. The images can be stored wherever: CD, tape, DVD, spare H/D
partition. I think it worthwhile to have more than one type of backup option.
