That's almost true. The Warp3 upgrade (not the full install) sniffed for
SYSLEVEL.OS2 as proof of a previous version. IBM soon discovered that
this was a bad idea for those users that needed, for some reason, to do a
fresh installed to a formatted drive so they published a tech tip
explaining how to workaround the sniffer.
