What's gives you that idea. All he says is you can't use Java 1.1.8 as
the plugin JVM.

>Hmm. I can't start Moz 1.7.2 because I have 1.0 running.

True. Don't do that or see:

<http://www.os2bbs.com/os2news/Warpzilla.html>

>I'm _really_ confused with all the different operating system versions it
>says I have.

I can see why. It seems you are making it up as you go rather than
reading what the page says:

Test your Java? Virtual Machine

This article applies to:

* Platform(s):
Solaris? 7, Solaris? 8, Solaris? 9
Sun Java Desktop System 2003, Red Hat Linux 7.3 and 8.0, SuSe Linux
8.0, TurboLinux 7.0
Windows NT, 98, 98 Second Edition, ME, 2000, XP, and Server 2003
Apple OS X
* Browser(s):
Internet Explorer 5.5 (SP2+), 6.x
Netscape 4.7.x, 6.2.2, 7
Mozilla 1.2.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.4.1
* JRE version(s):
1.1.8_xx and higher (xx can be 01-99) and Microsoft VM

This is a statement of what Java versions the page understands.

Then there has a box where you can click to get the plugin followed by the
text:

This page tests to see if the JVM? is working on your computer. This test
applet, written with Java? technology, displays information about your
operating system, the JVM and the Java? 2 Runtime Environment, Standard
Edition (JRE) version.

If you can see the dancing Duke logo? image animated in the applet above,
then the JRE is functioning correctly. Sample screenshots are shown below.

This is telling you what will happen if your Java plugin is working. Note
the use of the word "sample" in the last sentence.

>To make sure I didn't have multiple Java's somewhere, I just did a "DIR
>JAVA.EXE /S" across everything. This is what I got:

> 11-06-01 2:18a 6947 0 java.exe

>That's the only one I have.

Oh, I suspect I know the problem. You didn't view it with epm.

>The Java testvm.jsp web page also says I have a "Proxy setting error" and
>that "Loading Java Applet Failed". I presume this means they want me to
>unblock some port?

No. It means it wants you install a JVM that will work with Mozilla.

HTH,

Steven
