I just read the FLAC file format information at
http://flac.sourceforge.net/format.html
The compression methods which FLAC uses are similar to existing ones,
i.e. nothing really new although FLAC creates an error signal which is
sent along with the compressed signal so you can get a lossless restore
(sort of like comparing an MP3 to its original WAV file and sending each
sample's error amount along with the MP3 so you can create an exact
duplicate of the WAV by combining the MP3 and the error values).
Intriguingly, the math formulas which are a part of FLAC compression
rely on a predicted future change in the signal, which is similar to at
least one financial market prediction system.
